allonsy_chats_discussionsfeature

Hey everyone, welcome back to my blog! Today I’m coming to you with a discussion, talking about how I got out of my reading slump in January!

I was in a massive reading slump at the end of last year and into the new year, so I decided to write this blog post as I got through my slump! Since I’ve gotten out of my slump I’ve gotten into a really good reading routine, but with the Coronavirus and barely leaving my house thing happening, who knows what’s going to happen now!

How To: Get Out Of A Reading Slump

Need advice on HOW TO READ MORE?
or HOW TO READATHON?

This past month, I have been in a reading slump and I am now slowly getting out of it. I hate slumps so I thought it might be helpful to tell you guys how I get out of them!Β

Anyway, without furtherado, I hope this helps!

01 START SLOWLY

Try to ease yourself back into reading, start off with smaller novels or even a novella!

Often when you’re in a reading slump you don’t want to read so in order to get yourself back into the groove you need to read something familiar or simple. To get me out of my reading slump I picked up the Percy Jackson series and just listened to that on audio on Youtube.

Cheesy romantic novels are often an easy way to help get you back into reading.

Some cheesy novels I really enjoy are:

  • Twilight by Stephanie Meyer – don’t judge me I know it’s trash
  • The Lux seriesΒ byΒ Jennifer Armentrout
  • First & Then by Emma Mills
  • Evil Librarian byΒ Michelle Knudsen

That being said, Β while getting out of aΒ reading slowly is what usually suits me best sometimes what you need toΒ do is read quickly. Readathons can serve to really get you into the reading mood!

02 READATHONS

I wrote a post with some tips for readathons if you want to check it out!

Depending on who you are as a reader and the type of readathon, this will either help you out of Β a slump or put you deeper into your slump.

I usually don’t participate in readathons if I’m in a reading slump because I like to read at a slower pace when I’m in a slump. However, if you think a readathon might be the right thing for you there’s a whole readathon calenderΒ that you can check out!

Some of my favourite readathons:

03 AUDIOBOOKS

A majority of the books that I read, I listen to via audiobooks. In fact, audio is my favourite type of format I use to read a book.

If you don’t have access to audiobook sites or apps like AudibleΒ or Audiobooks.com then there is also a massive selection on Youtube and libraries usually have a solid collection.

With audiobooks you can always do other activities while listening to your book. My advice, if you’re in a slump or an audio beginner is to start off with a familiar novel that you’d be okay with spacing out on a bit.

Whenever I’m in a slump I feel pretty much exhausted which is why my slumps tend to hit towards during December/ January or the middle of the year around June and July. So what I try to do Β is keep busy – I go into the city but don’t buy anything, I just walk around, let my iced latte water down and listen to my audiobook. If you can’t make it to the city or get too distracted while you’re there you could always try your local shopping center (I think AmericansΒ call it a Mall??… weird). I get if the noise or the shops are too much of a distraction so if you have a dog you could always take them for a walk or even just go for a jog just by yourself.

Audiobooks I recommend:

  • Harry Potter series narrated by Stephen Fry
  • Cormoran Strike series narrated byΒ Robert Glenister
  • Mistborn series narrated by Michael Kramer

Let me know if you guys would like me to do a How To: Audiobooks because I know a lot of people struggle getting into audiobooks.

04Β DIFFERENT FORMATS

I think that changing up the format of what you’re reading can really affect your progress. Even if you just pick up something like a trade paperback comic, once you finish it I assure you, you will feel more accomplished!

Some of my favourite comics:

  • SpiderverseΒ by Dan Slott (Text), Christos Gage (Text) & David Hine
  • NovaΒ by Jeph Loeb (Text) & Ed McGuinness (Illustrations)

If comics just aren’t your style you could always try something different like a graphic novel, which is basically just a larger comic.

Some of my favourite graphic novels:

If you don’t want to read something that has a lot or any pictures than you might want to try just listening to something on audiobook. Or, if you do prefer reading with your eyes then you might want to try reading an ebook Β or a shorter novel because even if it’s a slight change to the way you usually read it might kickstart your reading!

05 CHILL OUT, WATCH A MOVIE!

Watch a movie based off of a book, this almost always works for me. Watching the movie inspires me to read the book and often if it’s a classic you can find the novel on the internet so it’s not too hard to start the book while I’m riding the high of the movie.

My favourite Book-t0-Movie adaptations:

  • Safe Haven
  • Not Another Happy Ending
  • Harry Potter
  • Gone Girl
  • Mansfield Park

My favourite Book-to-TV adaptations:

  • Shadowhunters (fight me, I really enjoy this show)
  • A Series of Unfortunate Events (my review for season 1 will be up soon so look out for that!)
  • Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency
  • BBC’s Class (not a book adaptation but books were written after the show came out)

If you’re in a slump and kind of want nothing to do with books that’s cool to!Β

Here are some other movies I enjoy!

  • Life As We Know It
  • Ant-Man
  • Mystic Pizza
  • The Man From U.NC.L.E.
  • How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days
  • Think like A Man
  • The Wedding Date

READING SLUMPS 1.0 – A QUICK OVERVIEW

  • It’s okay to be in a slump. If you’re not feeling like reading a book then go out and see some friends or see a movie.
  • Binge watch a movie or TV series. Sometimes you just need a break from reading. Catch up on some sleep and watch some Tv, no one will judge you, I promise.
  • It never hurts to read a favourite if you don’t feel like anything new.
  • It also never hurts to try another format.
  • Take a breather! You don’t need to be reading 24/7.

Reading Slump? | 20.01.2017

What’s Up With Me? What a wonderful question, let me tell you.Β

For the last week or so I have been in a reading slump. I know, ew. At the begining od the month I binge-read the Steelheart trilogy by Brandon Sanderson and as with all Sanderson novels, it was amazing. And from then on I didn’t have the motivation to read, I wasn’t watching TV, I wasn’t reading, I wasn’t doing much of anything to be honest.

But then, all of a sudden a few days ago I has the sudden urge to finish my re readΒ of the Percy Jackson series and boy, did I run through those last three books. I read them in three days!

Other than randomly picking up PJO I have read 100 pages of A Darker Shade of Magic, which I am trudging through, I mean I love it but I am reading it a word a minute.

MUSIC

RoughlyΒ an hour before I started writing this post I got myself obsessed with Waitress the Musical. The soundtrack is amazing and I love it. So far, my favourite songs from the suondtrack are Door Number Three, When He Sees Me & She Used To Be Mine.

MOVIES

The other day I saw Rogue One and I LOVED IT! Cassian Andor was definitely my favourite and I can’t wait to get the Funko Pop of him!

I would like to see Moana while it’s at the cinema, if I can. I’ve heard amazing things about this film and I can’t wait to see it!

TV SHOWS

Pushing Daisies

I started watching this show for the first time a few weeks ago and although I have only watched three episodes I already love it!

ClassΒ

I have not yet started this show but I am incredibly excited! I love this show already and I barely know the names of the characters. Class is a Doctor Who spinoff but without too much Doctor Who stuf – thank god because lately Doctor Who has been pretty subpar.

Shadowhunters

Shadowhunters season 2 just started a few weeks ago and I am definitely enjoying it! I love this show and I have heard that the show is h=going to deviate a lot from the books a lot towards the second half of the season.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

I bingewatched this show on Netflix as soon as it came out. I loved it and honestly I can’t wait to review it! NPH was amazing as Count Olaf and I am already highly anticipating season 2.

REVIEWS

I plan on writing reviews for the Netflix show A Series of Unfortunate Events and Rogue One. I should be coming later this month or early February.

Other than that,Β the reviews I have already posted this month are:

CURRENTLY READING

A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic, #1)Β Ms. Marvel, Vol. 2: Generation WhyΒ The Lost Hero (The Heroes of Olympus, #1)

A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic #1)

I am roughly 220 pages into this and while I am loving it, I am reading it a page per minute. I am hoping I can finish this by Sunday but at the rate I’m going I may not even finish it by the end of the month.

Ms Marvel Vol 2

I am half way through this volume and I really enjoyed it while I was reading this but honestly I don’t really have any motivation to finish this series.

The Lost Hero (Heroes of Olympus #2)

After I binge-read PJO last week I randomly decided to also re read The Heroes of Olympus because it’s been a while and hey, why not?

TO BE READ

These are the latest five books that I have added to my TBR shelf on Goodreads. Some of these books will be coming out later on in the year so I’ll be talking about them in my Autumn anticipated releases. Although, the others are already out and have been for a while.

ElantrisOne of Us Is LyingAlex, ApproximatelyThe Song of AchillesA Little Life

Elantris by Brandon Sanderson

I bought this earlier in the month and I’m pretty excited about this one. I really don’t like reading blurbs so like a lot of the books on my TBR I really couldn’t tell you what this one is about either.

One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus

The Breakfast Club with a criminal twist. Sign me the hell up!

This ounds amazing and I haven’t heard anything negative so I have high hopes!

Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett

A retelling of You’ve Got Mail. I am so ready for this book.

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

Do I even need to tell you why I want to read this? I love learning about the Greeks (even though I already know this story) so this is certainly up my alley!

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

I can’t say I actually know what this books is about, all I know is this is an important read and will make me bawl.
