COMIC ROUNDUP 3.0 // Giant Days + Devil Dinosaurs???

I’m bringing myΒ Comic Roundup feature back *cheers by myself* I really like to talk about comics on my blog but I rarely do unless I have a specific post related to comics, much like this series. So, I figured since I know that some of you guys do enjoy comics and that you appreciate recommendations I might bring this post back.Β

I don’t know if I’ll bring this back officially because no one ever really used to read the previous instalments, but I really just felt like talking about comics today so here we are I guess.

Let me know if you would be interested in me talking about comics more often in this type of format!

Giant Days, Vol. 1 (Giant Days, #1)

GIANT DAYS VOL 1

β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜†β˜†

So, I have conflicting feelings about this one! It took me two days to get through and on each day, I reacted differently.

Day one: I got half way through and was feeling pretty meh. Even though, this is a visual story (comic) I was still having trouble differentiating the characters and getting into the story.

Day two: I really enjoyed it. I was laugjing while I read it and having more fun as I read it. Still having the same problem with the characters though.

Interestingly enough, and I’ll talk about this more in my review, I have the same problem with the novelisation of this series (Coming out in August). I will definitely be trying out Vol 2 bcause I want to see why everyone raves about this series, but I won’t be going in with high hopes.

MOON GIRL & DEVIL DINOSAUR VOL 1

I loved this and I am so glad I read it! This is a wonderful comic series about aΒ beautiful scientist protag and her beautiful devil dinosaur bff kicking ass and taking names. I really loved this because it focuses on Lunella, a nine year old genius girl, and it really goes into how it’s completely okay to be smart and howΒ adults don’t always know or understand everything, and kids have brains too! Also, there’s a dinosaur and I love him and I’m pretty sure I would kill for him #noragrets

MOON GIRL & DEVIL DINOSAUR VOL 2

I love this so much holy hell. My actual rating is a 4.5/5 but, I absolutely loved this one! These comics are so much fun and really quick reads for me. I actually managed to read the whole things while I waited for a batch of cookies to bake in the oven for 20 minutes.Β Lunella is a brilliant mc and you guys, I just love dinosaurs so so much.

If you enjoy a really fun and intelligent mc with a beautiful and very red side-kick (who also happens to be a dinosaur) then this is the comic series for you! I honestly wish I had volume 3 with me, but unfortunately, my library doesn’t understand the importance of me being happy. Should I bribe the library staff? Is it wrong to bribe library staff?

The Flash, Volume 2: Speed of Darkness

reviewspoilers

I received an arc copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

MY THOUGHTS ON VOLUME ONE:

I am not totally sure how I really felt about this volume. This reminds me a lot of the show, though I have to say I have recently fallen out of love with the series. I had a hard time getting into this volume as I wasn’t really digging the art but as the volume went on I really started to like it. I really enjoyed Godspeed and Avery so I’m hoping to see their characters develop in volume 2.

reviewsynopsis

SYNOPSIS FOR VOLUME 1:

A new storm brews over Central City and disproves the old adage about lightning never, well…you know. Just as Barry begins to feel overwhelmed fighting crime, a new speedster debuts–but just where did this amazing new friend come from? Spinning directly out of the epic events of DC Universe: Rebirth, the Fastest Man Alive finds himself at the center of a DC Universe at a crossroads–and reeling from the reemergence of his protegee, Wally West!

reviewnotes

  • easy to read
  • cool villains/plot
  • everything happens very fast
  • centered around Wally West

reviewthereview

This is what I said on Goodreads after I finished the comic:

“I wasn’t really expecting to like this because volume 1 was pretty meh and I am really exhausted lately but I actually really enjoyed this one. I’m hoping to read volume 3 when it comes out later this year.”

Though I think I disagree with this now that I’ve had time to think about the comic. While I was definitely more impressed with this volume than the first, I still wasn’t a massive fan of it. Overall, I was pretty bored and now that it’s been a month since I’ve read the comic, I really doubt I’ll read the third volume.

arrowicon

In this volume we really got to explore the relationship between Wally and Barry which I really liked. I think if you don’t know much about the comics or you’re interested in learning more about Wally West, Rebirth is Β good place for you to start, especially because the series is so new and you don’t have too far to catch up.

I think in this comic I really realised why I preferredΒ Francis Manapul’s series, 1 I just really preferred Barry in that series and 2 I have never been a fan of the Barry x Iris reltionship, especially in the show because they’re asically siblings and it’s too weird.

This is definitely a cool comic series but after waiting a couple weeks after I read the second volume I’ve realised that I don’t really care about Rebirth. I much prefer Manapaul’s series. The only thing I really care about in this series is Wally, Barry is wet and boring, whereas Wally is more interesting to me as I know a lot less about him.

Also, I think I’m just falling out of love with The Flash in general, I don’t watch the show anymore. Actually, in general I might have fallen out of love with DC completely. The only thing I really care about is the WW films (my mum’s excitement makes me excited) and I am still planning to see the Aquaman film, though I doubt I’ll see it in the cinema.

I think Barry Allen as a main character is too much of a wet towel for me, I much prefer a superhero like Iron Man or Spidey, a character who actually has personality and isn’t just a guy with a sad past.

reviewquickoverview

  • Continuing plot from volume 1 but barely
  • Weak plot arc
  • I enjoyed it while reading it but I just don’t think The Flash is for me

reviewwillicontinue

I doubt it. I am interested in the storyline and how the comic series will end but I don’t really care enough to actually finish the series.

COMIC ROUNDUP [#2]

It’s been a minute since my first Comic Roundup (which you can find here!) so I felt it was about time for another one. I tried harder to change this one up a bit becauseΒ I know my last roundup was pretty meh and had a lot of Spider-Man in it. So, guess what, for my second installment I’m only talking about 1 Spidey comic!!

dividerarrowleftfeatureYoung Avengers, Volume 2: Alternative CultureΒ Amazing Spider-Man: Worldwide, Vol. 2Β Paper Girls, Vol. 1Β Image result for rocket raccoon & groot volume 0dividerarrowrightfeature

Young Avengers Volume 2

Finally getting some answers also WHAT. Volume 1 may have been somewhat of a let down but volume 2 was certainly not.

Amazing Spider-Man Volume 2

I’ve noticed the writer seems to write mainly 1 plot comics. What I mean by that is, in his series, each book sort of has it’s own plot. Overall, this was better than volume 1 but I am hoping for more from the series.

Paper Girls Volume 1

If I’m completely honest with you guys I didn’t really like this as much as I had assumed I would. I found it really underwhelming, I had heard only good things so when I finished it I felt like I had missed something big. I do currently have volume 2 out from the library so we’ll see how it goes but I think it will definitely make or break the series for me.

Rocket Raccoon & Groot Volume 0

If you are a fan of Guardians of The Galaxy then this comic is an absolute must. This follows Groot and Rocket and their adventures throughout the Galaxy – it’s basically them causing chaoswhen they aren’t saving the Galaxy with the rest of the Guardians.

Alsooo, we get to see how they met, basically it’s one fo the best comics I’ve read in a long time and it includes art from one of my favourite comic artist/authors and please read this one guys.

Have we read any of the same comics? Are you planning on reading any of these?

Comic Roundup | #1

I am currently procrastinating (again, whoops) and so I decided to help myself make reviewing comics easier. Often, when I’m faced with writing a review for a comic I freak out – have Β you ever tried to review a comic or graphic novel? It’s difficult, often they aren’t very long and there isn’t all that much to talk about. So I figured mini reviews of some of the most recent comics I’ve read is the best way for me to not overwhelm myself or you guys.

dividerarrowleftfeatureSpider-Man: Miles Morales, Vol. 1Β Jonesy, Vol. 1Β Amazing Spider-Man: Worldwide, Vol. 1Β Spider-Man/Deadpool, Vol. 1: Isn't it Bromanticdividerarrowrightfeature

Miles Morales Volume 1

I’m not sure how I feel about this yet. I really enjoyed Miles Morales as a character but some of his choices really didn’t resonate with me, I also feel pretty iffy about his friend, Ganke who Miles seems to really appreciate. I will definitely be reading volume 2 of this series as I think it has some great potential but I definitely prefer the original Spider-Man.

Jonesy Volume 1

This was a cute little story with awesome art, I cannot wait for the next installment. A friend of mine got this for her birthday earlier this month and really loved it.

The main character can be a bit much at times and it took me a second to get used to her personality, but overall I really enjoyed this.

Spider-Man: Worldwide Volume 1

I really enjoyed this, though not as much as I thought I would. I know that a binch of people didn’t love this comic as it mostly recieves 3 star reviews. I lvoe Spider-Man and aside from the Spideypool comic I talk about next, I haven’t read any post-Secret Wars Spider-Man. I didn’t think this was a 5 star read but I did really enjoy this, I’ll definitely be reading volume 2 asap.

Spider-Man/ Deadpool Volume 1

I love this duo and I cannot wait to read volume 2! I wasΒ raving about this comic while I was reading itΒ and if you enjoy comics I urge youto pick this up. (disclaimer: I do not ship Spidey-pool)

Spideypool is a really funny team up, Spider-Man doesn’t really like Deadpool and Deadpool thinks Spidey is the bee’s knees. Naturally, this comic is hilarious.

Jonesy, Vol. 1

I received an arc copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Comic reviews are kind of hard to write, because they’re so short there isn’t always a lot to talk about but I will certainly give this a fair go!

THE COMIC

Jonesy is about a “cool dork” named, well, Jonesy.

She is a snarky, too cool for school type of girl.

In this comic, Jonesy doesn’t really have any friends but she does make a friend, an LGBT character who has a crush on another girl, they are an adorable little duo, they call themselves the SCIS (Secret Crush Investigation Squad).

Image result for jonesy volume 1

This comic sort of reminds me of the Lumberjanes series, the art feels similar, the humor and tone of voice is also of the same vein. Aalthough, unlike Lumberjanes, Jonesy is more of a harsh character, she says things without much thought to how dhe might affect others. She’s too cool for school, she hates valentines day and despises prom. But at the same time she cares about her friends, works at her dad’s doughnut shop and sells zines that she slaves over after school. She’s got a hard shell, but she’s downright gooey inside. She’s mean, and sometimes she can be a completely selfish character but somehow, she is still a loveable character.

This is definitely a fun comic, I feel like Jonesy will annoy many people but for others she will be hilarious. Either way, I’ve already recommended this to a bunch of people, in fact one of my friends has already started it and she’s loving it so far.

ART

The art in this comic is honestly, really awesome.

Just look at it – it’s bright, cute and it’s fun. Don’t tell me that this artwork doesn’t make you want to add Jonesy to your TBR. It’s adorable and you need it in your lives.

Bitch Planet Vol. 1 [REVIEW]

Bitch Planet Volume 1 –Β Kelly Sue DeConnick (Writer), Valentine De Landro (Artist) & Robert Wilson IV (Artist)

my rating : 4/5

genre :Β dystopia, feminism

goodreads rating : 4.11

Bitch Planet, Vol. 1: Extraordinary Machine

**SPOILERS**

I really loved this, but at the same time it made me SO MAD!

What really scares me is that this story is a potential future for women. Sure, the men probably won’t ship us off to a whole other planet (or would they?) but I’m sure of them would really like to.

What I find most interesting about this comic is that while I was reading this I stated explaining it to my mum and she said to me “You know we’d be on that planet, right?” And it sort of hit me, like, yeah I would be on that planet, I’m not great at conforming and I really don’t want to be.

I urge you guys to pick this comic up. It’s an eye-opening experience. Women in real life are constantly g=being told to conform to this mold society has put in place for them.

We already have women on the news having to look perfect, the tight clothes, the makeup, the colour schemes. Where, it has not got to the point that women are literally stressing about everyone wearing the same colour. You all know what I’m talking about. Yeah, sure that was funny for about 5 seconds but these women are being grilled about their appearance so much that these things do happen – more often then we know, I’m sure.

This is such an empowering story. In fact, there’s a scene in this comic where Penny is supposed to be shown her ideal body – a skinny version of herself, basically. And do you know what she sees? She sees herself, just as she is. This is such an important scene – it shows that even in a world where men control everything, women can still believe in themselves and rebel in their own ways.

There was also another scene that I really wanted to talk about, because this scene really disturbed me, more than most of the things that happened in this comic. This is a world, where sure men and women get married all the time but a man taking advice from his wife is frowned upon. They see this is a bad thing – like, how dare she give him advice – as if he needs that. Ultimately they end up sending her to Bitch Planet (a jail for women) because a women giving her husband, or any man for that matter, advice send the “wrong idea”.

I implore you guys to give this one a shot – it won’t change your life but it will make you take a minute to see how we close we really are to having our very own “Bitch Planet”.

Another Castle: Grimoire [Comic Review]

[Comic Review]Β Another Castle: Grimoire

January 2017

Another Castle: GrimoireΒ by Andrew Wheeler & Paulina Ganucheau

3/5

I received a free copy from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A story with brilliant art and a kickass heroine, what more could you ask for?

Things to look out for:

  • The artwork
  • The writing
  • The kickass Heroine
  • Race and sexuality not being used as a plot point

I assumed that I would enjoy this because I’ve heard great things about Ganucheau’s previous works but this comic really went beyond my expectations.

Image result for another castle: grimoireΒ Image result for another castle: grimoire

Paulina Ganucheau’s artwork is adorable and bright. All of the characters look amazing and none of them look the same, they all have their own unique qualities and shapes. Throughout the comic we meet a whole world of different monsters and by the end of the story they end up coexisting with each other. The monster all look astounding, they are all different and they’re not too scary either!

Image result for another castle: grimoire

I also loved the writing, there is no stilted conversation and all of the dialogue sounded natural and like stuff a normal teenager would say. Andrew Wheeler created an impressive, beautiful and strong-willed princess. Misty, the main character of this comic is a princess who is actually trying to defend her kingdom instead of just hanging about and providing support when required.

Something I really loved about this comic and one ofΒ Paulina Ganucheau’s other works is the diversity, somics are really stepping up! Not only do we not have an all white, all straight cast but we have humans and monsters in healthy relationships with each other. The characters really make this comic!

[Comic Review] Limbo

[Comic Review] Limbo

June 2016Β

Limbo by Dan Watters

1.5/5

I received a free copyΒ from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was… interesting.

A detective with no memory and a town with a secret.

Sounds good right?

The cover is awesome and honestly it’s the main reason why I requested the comic and I didn’t hate the artwork throughout the volume. But while the plot was really interesting, Β in theory, it was a let down in the long haul. This comic had great potential but just didn’t reach the bar for me. The comic starts out pretty strong but gets weaker through the issues.

One of the main things I didn’t like in this volume was the senseless violence. I understand why we need action scenes but it felt like every second page people killing people or being murdered themselves.

I think this certainly has the potential to be a strange but unique new series but this volume was just way too everywhere.
