Hi everyone, welcome or welcome back to my blog! Back in 2021 I was really loving doing picture book reviews on my blog so I’m continuing with this year. This is officially my first review of the year so I’ve got lots of great picture books to talk about with you all!
Bella The Brave by Rebel Wilson & Annabel Tempest
- Hachette Australia
- October 2021
Did you know Rebel Wilson wrote a kids book because I didnβt but I think more people should! I loved this book, from the first page you can tell itβs going to be a good one! The art is fantastic and the characters are all different – not one looks the same! I really loved getting to know Bella and I just know I wouldβve appreciated reading about her when I was younger because Iβm sure I was very similar to her! Very cute and very heartwarming, I think with the help of Bella, a lot of little kids are going to find their voice!
Our Country: Ancient Wonders by Mark Greenwood & Frane Lessac
- Walker Books Australia
- February 2022
As an Australian this is the book Iβm most excited to review in this post. I feel like even though I live in this country and we were somewhat selectively educated on it in school, I still hardly know anything about it, so Iβm really excited about this one! The end papers are absolutely gorgeous! Theyβre a map of Australia but with marked areas for some of the amazing places talked about in the book, which I really love! I loved learning about each place and then going and pinpointing them on the map afterwards! I absolutely adored this book and the artwork! I loved how it took us all the way around Australia! This is the perfect read for any classroom but I also highly recommend it for your kidβs personal shelves too! Thereβs so much fun to be had in knowing more about the country (& state) you live in! I wish Iβd had this on my shelves when I was younger!
Tractor by Sally Sutton & Brian Lovelock
- Walker Books Australia
- February 2022
Where do I even start? The art! The colours! The tractor! Really though, this book is beautiful and I love how fun it is while teaching things about farming and different things about tractors! I now know how they plant seeds on a farm and itβs co much cooler than I was expecting! This is perfect for any little kids who want to know more about tractors or who are going through a vehicle-loving phase!
Big Love by Megan Jacobson & Beck Feiner
- Walker Books Australia
- November 2021
Before I even start – this cover and the end pages already make this a favourite! I love the art style and the colouring!! ππ I absolutely adored this book! The story is so so heartwarming but my favourite thing was the amazing diversity! There were all types or people and families included in this book snd I really appreciated that, itβs a book for almost everyone!! Of course, the artwork is absolutely stunning but the message is really what sells this book! Big Love gets a big thumbs up from me! π
Goodnight, Little Sloth by Amanda Wood, Vikki Chu & Bec Winnel
- Magic Cat Publishing
- February 2022
Iβve never read any of the previous books in this series so I had no idea what to expect but that was adorable! Itβs a very easy read, perfect for reading aloud and has wonderful bright artwork that really grabs your attention! This is a great little tory that I will absolutely be handing off to my local schoolβs library, and side note: the pages feel great!
Aliceβs Food A to Z by Alice Zaslavsky
- Walker Books Australia
- February 2022
Need a super simple recipe book for young kids or beginner cooks? Most of these ingredients you will either already have in your kitchen or theyβre the usual grocery store staples! There are some really simple and easy recipes that I recommend like the Leftover Rice Salad (pg 118) and Potato Wedgies (pg 111) and others Iβm really keen to try like the Classic Lemonade! There are some great recipes in here but I also really loved the pages dedicated to individual ingredients throughout the book. I particularly found the page about eggplants useful since Iβve been trying to experiment with them more in my meals! I highly recommend this for anyone trying to work up their food knowledge or who just needs a place to start!
Michael Rosenβs Sticky McStickstick by Michael Rosen & Tony Ross
- Walker Books Australia
- February 2022
You know, itβs interesting. I requested this book thinking Iβd read a bunch of Michael Rosenβs books in the past because I know that artwork but looking at his backlist now, I donβt think Iβve ever read one! This is a big moment! This is a wonderful, very easy to read story with, as always, brilliant art! Rosen cohesively and easily explains the process of learning to walk again, with the aid of his walking stick. We rarely see any kind of disability or impairment in books so to see this kind of representation in a childrenβs book is wonderful and I absolutely canβt wait to share it with as many kids as possible! I particularly loved the note at the end!
Little Wombatβs Easter Surprise by Charles Fuge
- Walker Books Australia
- February 2022
Iβm not gonna lie, for a second I thought Easter was even a thing and I only really ever remember it when I see hot cross buns at the shops so this was a perfect and very cute reminder! This had adorable artwork and I loved the calm colours! I also loved that the book included a Bilby since so many young kids donβt seem to be able to tell them apart from rabbits, which is a lot of what this book is about! This was such a cute little story and I canβt wait to share it with the kids at my local school!

Love the reviews! Michael Rosen had dinner illustrations for a lot of other books, including Roald Dahl. That might be why you thought you had read him before βΊοΈ

Thank you! Oh, that makes so much sense now! I’m sure I’ve seen him for all the Roald Dahl books I read as a kid!!
