AUGUST WRAP UP // Reading Old and New Favourites!

Hi everyone, welcome back to my blog! Today I’m coming at you with my August wrap up! This month started off really strong and I read some new favourites that I absolutely loved but I also had a fair bit of assessment towards the end of the month so my reading and watching really tapered off towards the backend of the month.

Overall, August was a good month, if not a little bit stessful towards the end, so now I’m really excited to see what I read or watch in September!

Also, for anyone curious, I host the GraphicsAThon with Destiny and round 2 will be taking place October 11-19th so you can look forward to an announcement for that soon!

  • Macbeth [03/08] β€“ 3 ⭐ – πŸŽ§πŸ” – Yeah, I really don’t have anything to add to this discourse, I’ve read this play so many times at this point that I’m kind of over it. I wish schools would branch out a bit and teach something other than the same 5 plays.
  • Can’t Escape Love [04/08] β€“ 4 ⭐ – 🎧 – I don’t know if I’ve smiled this much reading something for a while. This little novells made my heart so happy and I’m so glad I read it!
  • The Lost Hero [30/07 – 05/08] β€“ 3.5 ⭐ – πŸŒ»πŸŽ§πŸ” – buddy read with Destiny β€“ I didn’t love this book like I thought I would but, I am really excited to get to book 2 to find out what happens next!
  • The Deep [05/08] β€“ 3 ⭐ – 🎧 – I didn’t love this but I do still understand and appreciate the premise. This wasn’t the story for me but I do still recommend it because I think that so many others will love it so much more than me!
  • Midnight Sun [06 – 07/08] β€“ 3 ⭐ – 🌻🎧 – buddy read with Rebecca – This was a genuine suprise to me because I literally thought I was going to hate every second of it but I actually enjoyed reading it and I really do think this is an improvement on the original story in Bella’s pov. (Full review to come)
  • Beautiful Creatures [10/08] β€“ 3 ⭐ – 🌻🎧 – buddy read with Destiny β€“ I’m genuinely cuprised to say that I had a fun time with this! I think it makes all the difference that I was picturing Ethan as Alden Ehrenreich the whole time! πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ
  • Hush, Hush [12/08] β€“ 1 ⭐ – πŸŽ§πŸ” – I loved this as a teenager and reading this now I am genuinely worried about what the hell was going through my mind as I read this when I was younger.

  • Disfigured: On Fairy Tales, Disability, and Making Space [14 – 15/08] β€“ 4 ⭐ – 🎧 β€“ I recommend that everyone read this. A lot of it didn’t apply to me, but the bits that really did truly had me crying into my bag of chips.
  • The Myth of Equality: Uncovering the Roots of Injustice and Privilege [16/08] β€“ 3.5 ⭐ – 🎧 – This is very focused on Christianity so a lot of it went over my head tbh.
  • The Poppy War [16 – 19/08] β€“ 4 ⭐ – 🎧 – I haven’t felt this torn apart by a book like this in a long, long time. Holy shit.
  • Citizen: An American Lyric [20/08] β€“ 5 ⭐ – 🎧 – This book is devastating and relentless and so raw. Another eye-opening book with great writing. I can’t recommend this highly enough.

  • Breath [03/08] β€“ 3.5 ⭐ – Not what I was expecting but I really liked the humour and would absolutely watch this again in the future.
  • Beautiful Creatures [11/08] β€“ 2.5 ⭐ – This movie is NOT good and I completely understand why fans of the book hate it but at the same time I would die for Alden Ehrenreich’s dorky laugh.
  • She’s Out Of My League [13/08] β€“ 2 ⭐ – Inherinely problematic but I think the movie has a good message in the end. I also have a really strong urge to go and watch everything else Alice Eve has been in.
  • Expecting Amy Episodes 1 & 2 [13/08] β€“ 4 ⭐ – Amy Schumer has never been one of my favourite comedians, but che can actually be pretty interesting when she’s not trying to tell her stolen jokes.
  • Amy Schumer: Growing [14/08] β€“ 2.5 ⭐ – Yeah, Amy Schumer and jokes are not a great mix.
  • Newsfront [15/08] β€“ 2.5 ⭐ – Had to watch this for class, interesting but also pretty boring.
  • Work It [18/08] β€“ 3.5 ⭐ – On one hand I really enjoyed watching this but on the other hand, I feel like I’m hyper-aware of age difference these days. Jordan Fisher’s character is definitely a college graduate so why is he dating a high school senior? On the other other hand (I have 3 hands apparently?) I’ll watch anything with Jordan Fisher in it so I’ll definitely be watching this again int he future!

  • Rent Live! [19/08] β€“ 3.5 ⭐ – Riddled with technical problems and some unproffessional actors but overall, Jordan Fisher really shines as Mark Cohen and the set design was fantastic (though it looked really dangerous!)
  • Shameless Season 1 [24 – 25/08] β€“ 3.75 ⭐ – I had no idea what to expect from this show but I saw the seasons are pretty short and I needed to procrastinate doing my assignments so I put this on, fully expecting to turn it off 30 seconds later… obviously that didn’t happen.
  • Gilmore Girls Season 1 [20 – 30/08] β€“ 4.5 ⭐ – I can’t believe how much more I’m appreciating Emily Gilmore on this rewatch. At the same time, every scene with Dean is really getting on my nerves.

Shameless Season 2 [26/08 – ??] – So far I’m really enjoying this show and I’m really interested to see how it’s goin gto turn out since it’s very much a hopeless, torture porn-kind of a show.

Gilmore Girls Season 2 [31/08 – ??] β€“ I can’t believe how much more I’m appreciating Emily Gilmore on this rewatch. At the same time, damn every scene with Dean is really getting on my nerves.

  1. I am so scared of rereading Hush Hush. When I read it years ago I loved it, but now I fear I’ll think the same as you, what was I thinking when I read it in the first place ☹️

    1. Yeah, I loved it as a young teen but re-reading it now as an adult… yeesh it’s *not* great. It’s an easy quick read but massively problematic and toxic! I can only imagine how awful the next books are!

    1. Yes, I always have a great time reading with you and I’m already so excited to read more books with you in 2021!

No worries, it honestly doesn’t bother me! β€πŸ‘

Hush Hush should not exist and that’s the truth!
