The Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag [2020 Ed.]

Hi everyone, welcome back to my blog! Look at me actually writing something that isn’t a wrap up or a review! Today I’m doing the Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag. I do this tag every year and it’s officially the end of June which means it’s officially half way through the year which means it’s time to freak out!

2018 / 2019

I wasn’t tagged by anyone but I recently saw Ilsa do the tag on her blog and inspired me to write up my own answers!

GENERAL STATS:

# Books Read: 106

// BEST BOOK YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2020 //

Check, Please!, Book 1: #Hockey
Check, Please!, Book 2: Sticks & Scones

Check Please Vol 1 & 2

// BEST SEQUEL OF 2020 SO FAR //

The Raven King (All for the Game, #2)

The Raven King

Most of the sequels I read this year have been re-reads so far so weirdly, if we’re not talking about re-reads I’d probably have to say The Raven King by Nora Sakavic

// NEW RELEASE YOU HAVEN’T READ YET, BUT WANT TO //

My Dark Vanessa

My Dark Vanessa

I’ve had this book on my radar all year but haven’t gotten to it yet. I do have a copy on hold at my library and I plan on buddy reading it with Destiny later this month!

// MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE OF THE SECOND HALF OF 2020 //

Fence: Rivals
Fence: Striking Distance
A Deadly Education (Scholomance, #1)

  • Fence Vol 4
  • Fence Striking Distance
  • A Deadly Exucation
  • Loveless
  • Instant Karma

// BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT //

The Guest List

The Guest List

Maybe The Guest List? I feel like there have been a couple of small disappointments this year so it’s probably a tie between The Guest List or Ninth House because it had such a disappointing ending!

// BIGGEST SURPRISE //

Ninth House (Alex Stern, #1)

Ninth House

Probably Ninth House, the ending was disappointing as all hell but the first 70% was amazing and such a surpise because I’d only ever heard negative reviews for it!

// FAVOURITE NEW AUTHOR //

Captive Prince (Captive Prince, #1)
Prince's Gambit  (Captive Prince, #2)
Kings Rising (Captive Prince, #3)
Fence, Vol. 1
Fence, Vol. 2

C S Pacat

Thsi year I’ve really gotten into C S Pacat’s books and her comic series. I can’t wait to see what she writes next!

// NEWEST FICTIONAL CRUSH //

Yeah, I’ve never been comfortable with this question… so I’m just going to skip it this year.

// NEWEST FAVOURITE CHARACTER //

Shitty

I’ve got a really awful memory so I don’t remember most of my favourite characters from what I’ve read this year but Shitty from the Check, Please graphic novels comes to mind. He reminds me a lot of McGraw from the Giant Days comics and I really really enjoyed him!

// BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY //

Check, Please!, Book 2 by Ngozi Ukazu

Check, Please Book 2

I’m really not a crier when it comes to books BUT apparently Check, Please Vol 2 is the exception to the rule because I became unusually attached to these characters over a very short amount of time and was crying by the end of volume 2!! I can’t believe we only got 2 volumes with these characters!

// BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY? //

The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1)

The Lightning Thief

This series and pretty much anything else written by Rick Riordan will never fail to make me happy. I’m currently buddy reading Rick Riordan’s mythology series with Destiny and I’m LOVING the experiecnce!

// FAVOURITE BOOK TO MOVIE ADAPTATION YOU’VE SEEN THIS YEAR //

None of them, I don’t wanna talk about them. I’d love to say Normal People but I haven’t actually watched it yet!

// FAVOURITE REVIEW YOU’VE WRITTEN THIS YEAR //

Idk, maybe my Jane Austen reviews post? Honestly I’ve been writing quite a few reviews this year and I like 99% of them but I feel like I never really advertise my reviews, but I love my Jane Austen reviews post.

// MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU’VE BOUGHT THIS YEAR? //

Waste of Space
The Hand on the Wall (Truly Devious, #3)
The Red Pyramid (Kane Chronicles, #1)
The Lost Colony (Artemis Fowl, #5)
A Wrinkle in Time (Time Quintet, #1)

I haven’t bought enough physical books to really answer this question, so I’ll go with the books I’ve actually read this year since I feel like most of the books I read this year have had amazing covers.

  • Waste of Space, The Hand on The Wall, The Red Pyramid, The Lost Colony, A Winkle in Time

// WHAT BOOKS YOU DO YOU NEED TO READ BY THE END OF THE YEAR? //

The Lost Hero (The Heroes of Olympus, #1)
The Son of Neptune (The Heroes of Olympus, #2)
The Mark of Athena (The Heroes of Olympus, #3)
The House of Hades (The Heroes of Olympus, #4)
The Blood of Olympus (The Heroes of Olympus, #5)
Lady Midnight (The Dark Artifices, #1)
Lord of Shadows (The Dark Artifices, #2)
Queen of Air and Darkness (The Dark Artifices, #3)

The Heroes of Olympus, The Dark Artifices

I have quite a big buddy reading tbr for the rest of the year and one of the big series on my list is the Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan which I’ll be starting at the end of the month with Destiny. I’m also hoping to get around to The Dark Artifices and My dark Vanessa before the end of the year!

// FAVOURITE BOOK COMMUNITY MEMBER //

I have a love-hate relationship with this question because I love shouting out my faves, but I also don’t want to leave anyone out!

So here are my two best blogging friends: Destiny & Rebecca

  1. My favorite book this year has been Illuminae!! I’ve had a pretty good reading year so far with lots of good books; other than 2 DNFs, I don’t think I’ve rated anything lower than a 3.
