12 BOOKS I WANT TO BECOME TV SHOWS! // A DISCUSSION

Hey guys, welcome back to my blog! Today I’m coming to you with a long-awaited discussion post talking about a bunch of books I think would work really well on the small screen! As most of you will know, I’m a huge movie geek and I also really love a good tv show, so today I thought I may as well combine my two loves on my blog with you guys since I’m sure a bunch of you also love book adaptations and I’m sure there were a bunch that I didn’t even think of!

Three Dark Crowns (Three Dark Crowns, #1)

Three Dark Crowns Series

As long as they kept it dark and maybe the borderline between new adult & ya with some adult themes (as well as blood and gore etc) and don’t turn it into a ya soap opera but make sure it’s brutal and unforgiving – sort of like Game of Thrones but with teen characters – a lot of the audience for GOT were teens but they never made it any less gorey or brutal because of that, so I think if this show truly went there, it could be fantastic! Game of Thrones meets The Witcher but with a focus on women and politics!

Stalking Jack the Ripper (Stalking Jack the Ripper, #1)

Stalking Jack The Ripper

Everyone loves historical fiction mysteries and while there’s only 4 books I’m sure you could easily add on other storylines if the show was successful. I think the main pull of the series is the romance so you would definitely have to focus on that aspect and have the mystery be second but, this story definitely has potential with the dark tone and spooky historical London in the dark kind of vibes. Also, Jack the Ripper is a pretty compelling villain, I think the second book would also work particularly well if adapted, very spooky Dracula vibes. It would be a great show to release to binge in October. Think The Alienist but with more romance!

Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1)

The Infernal Devices Trilogy

I know we’ve almost been down this road before and not everyone wants this series to be adapted but I think if this was done right and with the right amount of darkness & gore +the atmosphere and spooky suspense vibes, this could be truly amazing. Also, I long to see a love triangle done RIGHT and WELL on screen. This has the same kind of vibe as Stalking JTR, but I think if you focused on the balance between frilly dresses and fighting demons in alleyways + solving a mystery you could have a great show. Honestly, this trilogy gives off amazing London fog vibes so I think it has some serious potential!

Moonstruck, Vol. 1: Magic to Brew (Moonstruck #1)

Moonstruck Comics Series

This was a really fun comic with an adorable art style and colour style so this would be an awesome animated series to binge-watch on Netflix. I can see myself actually sitting down to watch this and enjoying it. Also, it’s Lgbtqia friendly and features some truly adorable characters. Who wouldn’t want to watch that? The world is easily adaptable too, so it wouldn’t be difficult to come up with filler episodes or other plot lines.

Darkfever (Fever, #1)

Darkfever Series

(Keep in mind that I’ve only read book 1 in the series!)

We all love NA paranormal so Id be interested to see how this would be done especially because it is quite dark and can be quite gross at times. Also there’s a romance so you know people would obsess over it immediately.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1)

Harry Potter Series

At this point I don’t know if I want anyone to touch this series but I know it’s going to be rebooted at some point so I MAY AS WELL talk about it. I think this would make a fantastic series and I would love to actually see the characters grow up. I think this would be better as a (massively high budget) show instead of films because as we all know the books are quite detailed and there’d be more time to show everything that goes on + all the little details. Also, the books are all out so they won’t have that same issue of not including characters until it’s too late. *coughs* Ginny

The Gilded Wolves (The Gilded Wolves, #1)

The Gilded Wolves

National Treasure in historical France? Is there honestly a single person on this earth who wouldn’t watch that?

+ found family

+ character development and trauma that bonds the characters together? *chefs kiss*

Giant Days, Vol. 1 (Giant Days, #1)

Giant Days Comics Series

I actually think this would be an awesome NA/YA animated series. We don’t really get any uni college stories outside of romance plots (*coughs* After) so it would be really cool and a nice change of pace to see these characters on screen, especially since they’re all so different.

Also, this series is almost completely finished being published (the last volume comes out in November, I think??) so the writers would have the opportunity to actually know the characters they’re writing about properly enough to do them justice.

This is all to say that I really just need to see Graham McGraw and his stupid beautiful moustache on screen.

I Hate Fairyland, Vol. 1: Madly Ever After

I hate Fairyland Comics Series

The colours the art style! Oh my god, can you imagine? The potential! *falls to the ground* Why can’t I have this??! Why has no one adapted this?!?

Every Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children, #1)

Wayward Children Series

This series would be a fantastic mini-series! You could do 1-3 episodes per story/book and it would be amazing. You wouldn’t need to go crazy and some stories you probably only need 1-2 hours of screen time to tell but God, it would be so worth it!Β  Seeing all of those different worlds on screen would be mind-blowing!

Fence, Vol. 1

Fence Comics Series

I don’t know if this would be better animated because I love the style in the comics or if it would be better live-action, either way, we need to see these boys on screen. It’s gay angst o-clock y’all!

The Diviners (The Diviners, #1)

The Diviners Series

  • historical
  • romance
  • full, diverse cast (ethnicity and sexuality-wise!)
  • actual on-screen asexuality rep oh my god I can and will faint
  • genuinely a scary series so this could be such a fantastic suspenseful and frightening kind of show! Like, it’s light and it’s the roaring twenties and we have an amazing found family aspect to endear the audience to the characters but also the big bad guy is terrifying and sings spooky songs in the dark and you don’t know what’s going to happen next!
  • God, I need this now!

  1. ooh, I’d love to see a Wayward Children TV series; they could do so much with it! I also just started the Three Dark Crowns series and can def see TV potential in that one as well; it could be so dark and amazing!!

    1. Cool, that’s great to hear! I so often hear people talk negatively about that series if it was ever on tv, so that’s really refreshing! I agree Tessa is such a fun character!

  2. Oh I would love to see Stalking Jack the ripper and Giant days!
Every heart a doorway would also be interesting to see, but I also think it would be very hard to create the atmospheres of these books!

    1. I think they’d both be so cool on screen! Do you think Giant Days should be live-action or animated?

I agree, Wayward CHildren would be difficult to get right, but I think it has a lot of potential!

    1. Haha, whereas, I think about it way too often! I think it could be amazing as a tv show because they’d have the time to seed all the little details early on in the story and we’d get a more well-rounded and character balanced story!

    1. Same here, would you want to see it animated or live-action? I’m leaning towards live-action but I think it could be an amazing 1-2 season NA animated show!

Oh my god, definitely! The movies were great but I’ve always thought that the story was better suited to a tv show because of how many characters and details are in the books! We never had time to get to know the characters in the movies!

      1. I love animated more – otherwise I might not like the actors as much as I did the characters on pager.

A HP tv show would give us so much more time for the characters. I also would love to visit a different wizard school, brand new stories and characters. πŸ˜€

    1. The potential! It could be such an interesting and dark show! You’re right, the series gets better with each book, she just announced book 6 and it sounds amazing!

      Thank you! πŸ’–

  3. I would LOVE to see a really well done Harry Potter TV show someday, that includes all the things the movies left out or did badly. I’m sure it’ll happen, but hopefully it’ll be sooner rather than later!

Ooh a TV adaptation of The Gilded Wolves could be so cool and aesthetically pleasing!! I would ABSOLUTELY watch it πŸ˜€ I’m always a fan of shows/movies set in historical periods, so I could be all about that, as well as any adaptation of The Diviners. I’ve only read the first of the Wayward Children series, but I completely agree that they could become a wonderful miniseries!

    1. I know, I really hope that it happens, but I doubt it will until the Fantastic Beasts franchise is done and that’s not for like, 6+ years! I think the books should have only ever been adapted to tv because of how intricately detailed they are, but the movies did their best!

Yeah, The Gilded Wolves would be a fantastic tv show! I agree, so many good tv shows!

  4. Oh my gosh, boo, this list is PERFECT lmao. Yes to all of this!!! Well, I haven’t read 3DC yet (but I will eventually!), but still. Especially Giant Days, you’re so right and it would make an awesome animated show! I swear I heard that Wayward Children is being considered for a TV show but I’m not sure if I dreamed that or not… πŸ˜‚

  5. Great post, love the topic. There are so many books I’ve read that I’d love to SEE. I was super bummed with how Deborah Harkness’ A Discovery of Witches turned out. I mean it was nice and all but not the same no no, I don’t think they did it justice. Reminded me how I felt when I saw One for the Money by Janet Evanovich as a movie. Oh no no no no no no… I might have to borrow your topic of course giving credit though. πŸ˜‰

I read Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare last month and I’m sorry I cannot read the Shadowhunters, it just didn’t do it for me. The fact that it was a really long book made it worse. So I do not know anything about the Shadowhunter books you mention. Also I don’t have access to the adaptations I’ve heard have been made so far, which I’ve also heard were pretty bad (I still wanted to check it out for myself.)

The Wayward Children series is on my TBR. I’m thinking I have to bump them up and get to them sooner. I read in a couple comments that this is set to be adapted for screen? Wow that’s cool. I can only imagine what that must feel like for an author. So cool…

I’ve only read/listened to the first book of The Diviners. I did enjoy it though maybe it could have benefited from being shorter I will continue with the series and I would most certainly watch the show. πŸ™‚

I recently started reading Akata Witch (Akata Witch, #1) by Nnedi Okorafor (author of novellas Binti), it’s YA/middle-grade. Apparently this series is being adapted for screen. As well the author is working with Marvel on a story about Black Panther’s sister AND working on screen adaptation for her novel Who Fears Death which I have not read. I know you didn’t mention these but since we’re talking TV/movie stuff I thought I’d share. πŸ™‚ Will be curious to know if you’ve heard of or read these, or maybe you will! πŸ˜€

    1. Thank you! Really? I watched it and didn’t mind it! My mum loved it whereas, I was more lukewarm about tit but I also didn’t *love* the book! What specifically did you dislike about it? I thought the casting of the main girl was pretty good but I’m not sure about Matthew Goode! Wbu?

Ahh yes please do, I would love to see what you think on the topic! Pls tag me so I can read it! πŸ’–πŸ’–

Haha, I can understand that! Maybe this world just doesn’t work on screen, it hasn’t clicked so far!
I, personally think the movie is awful and like certain aspects to the show (though I don’t like the guy who plays Jace) but I think the first season was pretty bad! The writing was god awful!

I love the Wayward Children series! The books are super short and really atmospheric! It is set to be adapted which I didn’t know at the time, it’s very exciting! I hope you enjoy the books if you give them a go!

I love The Diviners series, though I’ve not read book 4 yet! I love the whole roaring 20s vibe from the book and add that with the horror elements in the series and I think it’d be a really interesting tv show!

Ooh, I’ve heard of Akata Witch! I had no idea it was being adapted, I’ll have to check it out! I’m definitely adding it to my tbr!
