Hi everyone, welcome back to my blog! Today I’m coming at you to talk about all the books on my tbr that I’ve been avoiding. I’m not necessarily intimidated by, but I’m sort of avoiding like, I’ll see them on my shelves or on my Goodreads tbr and I’ll just sort of quickly move along!
IT, ADSOM, SLEEPING BEAUTIES
So, these three books are probably the most intimidating books I have on my tbr. I don’t own It just because I think if I ever actually read it, I won’t want to re-read it. But, funnily enough, the size isn’t what’s intimidating me, it’s more that I’m afraid of disliking it, which is probably ridiculous but oh well!
I also have Sleeping Beauties & A Darker Shade of Magic on my tbr and I have gone to read these books SO many times but never actually cracked them open, so you guys really need to kick my ass and make sure I get to them!
WARBREAKER, ELANTRIS, ALLOY OF LAW
I have only ever read Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn trilogy and his Steelheart trilogy so the fact that I actually have Warbreaker and Elantris on my bookshelves makes me feel really guilty. I also desperately want to continue the rest of the Mistborn series hopefully next year, but I also have some major reading plans next year so I have no idea if this is going to happen any time soon!
WE ARE THE ANTS, THE SEVEN DEATHS OF EVELYN HARDCASTLE, MEDDLING KIDS, MIDDLEGAME
I feel SO BAD about these books because I’ve owned We Are The ANts for I don’t even know how many years and I’ve owned Meddling Kids for 2-3 years as well! I’ve also gotten Evelyn Hardcastle and MIddlegame out from the library this year with plans to read them both but, I just got too intimidated and didn’t even crack them open!
SCYTHE TRILOGY
I’ve read book one in the series and I even own book 2 but I still haven’t continued with the series and I’m not even sure why – I think the series just got so hyped with book 2 that I got scared lol. I am hoping to get over myself and read the series when book 3 comes out later this year!
Ah, great topic! I definitely skip passed books on my TBR. There are so many books that have been on there for years. In part I own books that I say gosh you better read that, some of the books were my grandmother’s or great-grandmother’s and I feel like I should read them in large part because they might have. Then I’ve got a load of non-fiction that I really want to read but when it comes down to it my attention and focus tends to be crap unless I’m writing (even then…). There’s also an author I used to read all the time – when I had less access to recommendations, let’s put it like that – (i.e. Nevada Barr Anna Pigeon series) and I just have a hard time getting back to. For one it’s been SO LONG since I read any of the books I have forgotten so much, including which book I read last. And since I last read those books my eyes have been opened to fantasy and sci-fi in a way that distracts me from mystery/thrillers.
I have the whole trilogy, got on discount, of A Darker Shade of Magic and I keep forgetting I have it! Plus I haven’t been reading so much as listening lately. Perhaps we can help hold each other accountable to get down to it. I have heard A LOT of good things about this series as well as the author. When I hear about an author being good period that appeals to me even more. Perhaps I’ll get to them next now that I’ve said all of this and link back to you. π

Thank you!
I also own a lot of my mothers’ old books and I think a few of them I am just keeping not to offend her but others I keep telling myself “I’ll read that one day!”
I have the whole trilogy too, and I keep intending to get to it, but it hasn’t happened yet! Yes, I’ve hears good things about the author too which gives me hope! I hope you enjoy the books!

Interesting and I hear you on the not wanting to offend part though my Grandmother is no longer around I still. Can’t. Let. Go. π
There’s so many books to read in the world I don’t know what to do with myself but audio books have really helped me shorten the list (barely, but one by one, one by one…). Still not to Darker Shades yet π

Are we the same person? So many of these are on my TBR as well. I have also only read the first book in the Scythe series!

Yes, I’m hoping next year I’ll be able to make at least a small dent in my tbr! I’m hoping to get to the Scythe trilogy very soon!

I totally feel you on the Sanderson books! It took me a long time to pick up the mistborn trilogy, but ended up loving it! Then it took me forever to pick up warbreaker, but again I loved it!
I also really want to read Middlegame, but it scares me a bit haha!

Sanderson’s books are some of the most intimidating on my tbr but I always enjoy them!
I still haven’t read MIddlegame, it’s so BIG! Have you?

This post made me realise just how many books on my tbr I’ve been avoiding, hopefully 2020 will remedy that! I’m hoping to get to Scythe very soon!

This is a great topic! Thinking about it I also have books that I avoid π Strange the Dreamer series is one of them as I’m afraid I wont like it as much as everyone else does #weird π

Haha, I actually wasn’t a big fan of Strange The Dreamer so it depends what you’re looking for in the story? I personally believe the 1st half was better, but I know a lot of people disagree.
Have you read it yet? What elements are you hoping to get out of it?

I haven’t read it….to be honest I only got it as people raved about it. Fear of missing out is strong with me π

I recommend the audiobook but otherwise in my opinion, you’re not missing much!

I have been intimidated by A Darker Shade of Magic for years, and it’s probably been sitting on my self judging me for just as long. I’ve finally made it past the 20% mark and I have to say I honestly don’t get the hype. There seems to be a lot going on but nothings actually happening??? I don’t know! Also I’m not invested in the characters. Like at all???
Am I reading the same book as everyone else???????????
I’m really hoping I enjoy A Gathering of Shadows more…

Same here! I don’t know why, but it’s such an intimidating series! My copies are definitely judging me from my bookshelf and I swear I feel bad about it!
I think I’ll probably give it a go late next year or early 2021 but for some reason, I think it’s going to be a slow start for me and I’ll either love it or I won’t.
I hate it when that happens! Did you end up finishing it? Did it get better?

Lol – no it didn’t get better. I finally finished A Darker Shade of Magic but I’m happy in my decision to just walk after from the series for the time being. I’ve decided that it’s okay to let then glare at me from my shelves and come back when I want to. I think half the problem is the fact that I’ve been putting so much pressure on myself to finish them and like them.
If you beat me to them you’ll have to let me know what you think! Here’s hoping they get better hahaha π

I’m sorry to hear that! But, I’m glad that you’re taking a break when you need to!
I’ll make sure to let you know if i finish them!

I really hope you get to read ADSOM soon! I honestly feel like you’ll like it (*knock on wood, crossing fingers*) lol!

I’ll probably end up reading it sometime next year, the trilogy has been sitting on my shelves for too long!

This is me with so many series. I’ve been avoiding Mistborn even though I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about it. Also Scythe, Passenger by Alexandra Bracken, and the rest of the And I Darken trilogy by Kiersten White.

I LOVE Mistborn and am a big fan of Sanderson’s storytelling and writing style! If you like audiobooks I definitely recommend them for this series!
Ooh, they all sound amazing!

Ooh, I love audiobooks so I’ll have to give the Mistborn ones a try. Thank you!

Okay so I’ve read Seven Deaths and Middlegame and, while they are both great books, they are also both books that you need to be really invested and “in the mood” imo. So not the worst reason to put them off until the time is really good for you βΊοΈ

Okay, well I still haven’t gotten to them so maybe I’ll get to them next year? Honestly, they’re very low on my tbr at this point!

This is so relatable π Responding to comments about books I need to read really late but still not even having looked at the book let alone picked it up yet. You are not alone haha.

IT is so INTIMIDATING, dude i feel you. its just SO BIG and so SCARY and DO I REALLY WANT TO PUT MYSELF THROUGH THAT???
omg you TOTALLY need to read warbreaker, it’s so much fun and the relationships and friendships are so precious. and dw the 2nd era of mistborn is REALLY easy to read. i found that it FLEW and the characters have great banter, so its all a fun ride.
i know scythe is a really polarizing series but i do hope you love it when you decide to continue bc the second book was a work of art (in my professional opinion)
good luck with these books!!

Oh my goodness, I’ve been procrastinating reading IT as well! It’s so intimidating. Not to mention I’m one of those people who are highly fearful of clowns and I’m like… YIKES. Sweaty palms and shifty eyes about it, you know? I’ll get to it eventually. Maybe in 2055? Who knows. It’ll happen. Also, I have been avoiding reading any Brandon Sanderson but I’m not actually sure why? Maybe it’s because he has so many books and is so beloved. BUT, when I do read him I’ll probably start with the Mistborn trilogy.
The Seven and a Half Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle was one of my favourite books last year but it’s DEFINITELY a mood read and one that requires a bit of focus, you know what I mean? So I can definitely see why you’re feeling intimidated by it. I liked how unique and slightly strange it was. So, if you get to it in the future, I hope you enjoy it! If not, I hope you throw it! (Normally I don’t condone throwing books but for some reason that felt like a logical comment. It’s the lack of sleep.)
I loved this post. Seeing what other readers are avoiding or don’t like is always so interesting to me. Here’s to hoping that when/if you stop avoiding these books, you find some new favourites!

IT is so big that I wouldn’t even know where to start! Also, I’m totally a scaredy-cat so I really don’t know how well I’d cope reading it! (also I’ve heard some unsavoury things about the ending and I don’t know f I really want to put myself through that)
Sanderson is a great author, I hope you give him a try!
I’ve heard that about Evelyn, I want to read it because I think it’s completely up my alley! Hopefully, I’ll get to it next year!
Haha, if I don’t end up getting to it, I’ll take it off my tbr, don’t you worry!
I hope some of these will be new favourites for me! Do you have any books on your tbr you’ve been avoiding?

I’ve been avoiding reading IT too. My dad’s a huge Stephen King fan, so I have the book in my house, but I can never seem to bring myself to pick it up π
Okay, I have so many faves from this list! The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hugo is FANTASTIC! I loved it so much and you should read it ASAP. I also enjoyed We Are the Ants, though I know that Shaun David Hutchinson’s books aren’t for everyone since they’re a bit weird.

It’s SUCH a BIG book!
I’m super excited about Evelyn Hardcastle, but I’ve heard I have to be in the right mood so I’m hoping to get to it in Autumn next year! I also want to read We Are The Ants and I can’t believe I haven’t read it yet!
