Hey guys, it’s day 10 of Blogmas and today I’m talking about my top 5 most disappointing reads of 2018! These weren’t my worst reads for the year because luckily I didn’t have too many of those, but these are the ones I most excited for but was really disappointed by!
THE MONSTERS WE DESERVE
Honestly, I don’t know how this got to be so bad. I know that a lot of people loved it so clearly it just wasn’t the book for me but, damn I hated every second of this one. From what I can remember, it’s basically just a man b*tching about how much he hates Frankenstein while sitting up in a cabin and trying to write a book.
You can read my review here but be warned, it’s pretty bitter.
CALL ME BY YOUR NAME
I think this was actually my first read of 2018 so I really kicked the year off with a bang, didn’t I? I wanted to love this because I know so many others did and because my friends were going nuts over the movie, but honestly, it just wasn’t for me. I’m pretty sure I gave it a glowing review, but that was really just me trying not anger anyone because it was all anyone was talking about and the bookish community can be brutal. I wasn’t big on the romance and honestly, I’m kind of baffled that they’re making a second movie considering how unconvincing the first film was. But okay???
TRULY DEVIOUS
Okay so for a YA mystery/thriller this is pretty good – it’s got a likable main character and an interesting premise. My only vice with it is that it’s the first book in a trilogy and I didn’t know that at the time. This is only the first book which means it’s February and I’ve just read a 400 page book which ended up only being the first part of the mystery which means it just ended on a cliffhanger which means I have to wait until January 2019 for part 2 which will probably also end in a cliffhanger and can you understand how frustrated I was??? I was a ball of rage and confusion and it wasn’t pretty.
GIANT DAYS
So, maybe this is on me because I went into this with very high expectations but honestly,, the characters are pretty 1D (from what I remember) and I couldn’t tell them apart most of the time. Also, not to sound even more bitter but was there a point to this volume other than just confusing me???
(the art was nice tho)
A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES
Okay, so this book was a big fat yikes and I’m not about it (she says as she begrudgingly drags herself through book 2). So, unlike the other books on this list, this one actually started out really well and I was sure it would be another 4 or 5 star read, but then the love interests got together and the loveable and strong protagonist became weak and submissive. The plot became super weird, the main character stopped having a personality and from what I can tell book 2 is 100x worse.
Too bad about Call Me By Your Name. I keep going back and forth on whether or not to read it! I haven’t seen the movie yet either!

I really don’t think the book was as good as everyone says it is and I know the author is writing a sequel which makes no sense and I’m 90% sure it’s just because the author doesn’t want a second movie to be made and this is the only way he can control anything about it.
I also wasn’t big on the film but I would recommend it if you like music in film and also because the MC’s Dad has an amazing speech at the end of the film and it definitely makes the film worth it. I hope you enjoy it if you decide to pick it up, it would probably worth watching just to have a stance on the film and to know why it’s so popular!

Oh nooo, I’m about to read Giant Days! 😂 I hope I like it more than you did, but if I don’t, at least it’s just a library loaner.
