Hey guys, today I’m coming at you with a new type of book recommendation. I didn’t feel like getting super negative today so I thought I might put a twist on the whole “Popular books I hated” type of post. Today, I’m going to try my hand at being a nice person… and I’m going to recommend books I don’t like!Β
Click on the covers to go to the Goodreads pages!
ILLUMINAE – AMIE KAUFMAN & JAY KRISTOFF
- Really interesting storytelling technique
- Despite the size, it’s a quick read
- Everyone loves the AI??
- Will make you cry apparently?
THEY BOTH DIE AT THE END – ADAM SILVERA
- In true Silvera style, this is depressing af
- Awesome cover
- The title
- Diverse characters
MS MARVEL – G. WILLOW WILSON & ADRIAN ALPHONA
- Pakistani American Muslim mc
- Great art style & colouring
- Strong female mc
- Really fun to start off with if you aren’t into comics but plan on continuing the series (not everything is explained in vol 1)
172 HOURS ON THE MOON – JOHAN HARSTAD
- The blurb says this a “terrifying thriller for young adult fans of The Martian and paranormal space adventure…” I disagree, I think this a good place to start if you’re trying to get into sci-fi or YA horror, but it’s definitely nothing like The Martian.
- It’s a translated work
- It’s a quick and interesting read if you’re looking for a bit of a scare
TO KILL A KINGDOM – ALEXANDRA CHRISTO
- This has a really brilliant premise
- If you like unlikable characters this is the one for you!
- A really cool twist on “The Little Mermaid“
- Incredibly captivating
- Hate-to-love romance
- Sirens!
A THOUSAND PIECES OF YOU – CLAUDIA GRAY
- Such a prettiful cover
- Brilliant plot idea
- All the plot twists
- So much travelling!
- Plot-centric romance
UNHOOKED – LISA MAXWELL
- An interesting view on Neverland lore
- Very descriptive
- Finally, a book that admits Tinkerbell is kinda sucky
- Captin HookΒ πππ
- Evil PanΒ πππ
CARRY ON – RAINBOW ROWELL
- I can’t believe I am here recommending this book. I hate Carry On and I feel no shame. But… I do understand why others do like it.
- It’s got an interesting m/m romance
- It’s heavily based on the HP series, so it’s got that nostalgia factor
- There’s a guy named Basil, and I love that
- There’s weird magic – you will love it or you will hate, there is no in between
- Draco/Harry hate-to-love romance
This is such a good idea! I’ve also started to recommend books I don’t like because it doesn’t seem right to keep them away from the blog just in case someone else stumbles across them and ends up liking them. I know the reasons why I personally don’t like Carry On are the reasons why many people love it and I believe it’s petty to ignore its popularity out of spite.

Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it! π I feel the same way, it’s not fair to ignore books just because I didn’t like them! I mean, most of these books are hyped in the bookish community so obviously a lot of people love them! Haha, yes, Carry On. I really hated that book but I do see why people enjoy it.

This is such a great idea because there are quite a few books that i personally didnβt like but i can see why others would like them based on things like tropes and character types and stuff! ππ

Exactly, there are so many books that we just ignore because we didn’t enjoy them, but I think there is always the chance for others to love them!

Oh wow this is such a great concept, I love it! It’s definitely a unique way of talking about books you didn’t really like, especially as there are sometimes aspects that you somewhat did like π

Thank you! Exactly, why let them sit on a hate shelf when obviously so many others love them! π
