MARVEL-A-THON UPDATE WEEK FOUR

Hey guys, today I’m coming at you with my Marvel-A-Thon wrap up for week 4!

MONDAY 25

My Plain Jane (The Lady Janies, #2)

9:33 AM

It’s a new day and a new week which means new blog posts and a new me. Naturally, the new me is sick, but at least the new blog posts are kicking! I had one that I’ve been excited about for months go up today so I can’t wait for you guys to read it – it’s called The Lady Janies Book Tag – and it’s an original tag and I’m still screaming you guys!

12:37 PM

It’s a miracle, I’ve finally finished a book! I just finished Ice Wolves and honestly I love Amie Kaufman but that book was so meh holy shit.

TUESDAY 26

2:45 PM

Ugh, another day, another book being left unread. I think I’ve come to terms with not finishing the readathon at this point so I think I’m just going to chill and try listening to something different, like Divergent??

I pretty much spent the whole day out of the house. I ended up at the Lifeline Bookfest (again) since my trip went so poorly on Sunday but, I ended up not even buying any books for myself. I took one of my brothers with me and he found some Mythbusters and some other dvds (I found The Mummy 2!) but I ended up once again, only coming away with dvds, AT A BOOK SALE!???!??!!!

I don’t know if I’ll go back again or this is me officially giving up hope but, I think it’s safe to say that this has not been my year.

6:59 PM

I just outlined (and organised) a post to go up on Tuesday and I am both excited and anxious about it. It involved my brother and my bookshelves so expect some mayhem!

WEDNESDAY 27

Divergent (Divergent, #1)

10:51 AM

I am so glad I decided to pick up Divergent for a reread! I started it this morning and I’m roughly seven chapters in and having such a fun time!

I’m watching Friends now and writing blog posts but I actually can’t wait to pick it up again!

9:37 PM

I am honestly so surprised by how much I’m enjoying re-reading Divergent. I’m going to put it down for the night and watch some more of Friends but, I will definitely be picking it back up tomorrow!

THURSDAY 28 & FRIDAY 29

I think I’m going to combine today and tomorrow purely because I have the same plans and my brother is home from school so I think all I’m going to do is play Mario Party and read Divergent.

SATURDAY 30

Today is the last day of Marvel-A-Thon and I know I really started to dwindle pretty quickly but I’m not even mad because I’ve already read so many books this month that I don’t think I would’ve read until years later.

As for today’s plans, I am going into the city with the fam and I’ll probably pick up The Loneliest Girl In The Universe or I’ll just continue with Divergent, either way, I’m just spending the day chilling.

SPOILER FREE MINI REVIEWS: Legendary & Three Dark Crowns

Hey guys, today I’m coming at you with some new book reviews! Today I’m reviewing Legendary by Stephanie Garber and Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake!

Legendary (Caraval, #2)

β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜†

tags:Β Magic, Female MC, YA

TW:Β Memories of abusive parenting

I really wasn’t sure if I would enjoy this one. I really love Stephanie Garber’s writing but, I wasn’t sure how I would feel about the pov change in this one. I loved Caraval (all 3 times I read it) and so I had pretty high hopes for this one. I wasn’t sure how I would feel about Donatella since she is so different to her sister, who I definitely relate more to. But, I ended up really enjoying her. This book focuses on a new game of Caraval but, this time it’s not just a game. I really enjoyed all the big reveals and plot twists. I called most of them pretty early on, but it honestly didn’t even matter to me because I enjoying the book so much!

I do recommend reading or re-reading Caraval before you dive into this one because there are so many plot points I would have forgotten if I hadn’t done a re-read! It just made reading book 2 such a better experience, and I will definitely be re-reading books 1 and 2 before I read FInale (book 3) next year! I’ve really enjoyed reading from both Scarlett’s and Donatella’s POVs so I know Finale will definitely be one of my most anticipated reads of 2019!

Three Dark Crowns (Three Dark Crowns, #1)

Thank you toΒ Pan Macmillan Australia for supplying the e-arc via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜†

tags:Β YA, Fantasy, Elementalist Magic, Stick with it

TW:Β Death, Betrayal, Family Mistreatment

This was honestly so good??? I wasn’t even going to read it, it was barely even on my radar but then some fellow bloggers started raving about it so I decided to give it a shot.

The book ended up being really amazing. I mean, it gave me so many headaches and it was really slow and it felt soo long but, I really enjoyed it! It honestly was starting to take me so long to read that I considered not finishing it. But, I did finish and the pay off was so good! As soon as I finished I immediately put book 2 on hold at the library and I can’ wait to read it!

I really enjoyed the sisters in this one! I didn’t love all of them but, I thought Mirabella was really interesting. They are all being manipulated by their families and lied to by their respective Government systems so I think it’s going to be really interesting to see how the first book pays off and how everything comes to a head plot-wise and sister-wise in book 2!

SHOULD WE REGRET READING BOOKS?

Hey guys! Today, I’m coming at you with a new discussion! Today, I’m talking about whether we should we regret ever having read a book. I personally have never regretted reading anything, but I know that isn’t the same with all readers! Let me know in the comments which books you regretted after reading them!

flowerdivider

HELPS YOU DISCOVER WHICH BOOKS YOU DO AND DON’T LIKE

Twilight (Twilight, #1)

Reading books helps us discover our tastes in life. We can learn whether we have an inquisitive mind and enjoy mysteries and thrillers, or if we love a good gooey romance combined with a really cool space war. Books like Twilight and Alex Rider are books that really helped me to infer my reading tastes. I discovered the YA age group through Twilight and with Alex Rider I discovered that I actually love books (and movies) involving spies.

Twilight also introduced me to staying up all night to read a book. it was y first all-nighter and I honestly wouldn’t trade it for anything.

NO READ = NO DISCUSS

Carry On

Okay, so if you know me at all then you know that I hate Carry On with a passion and originally I wasn’t even going to read it. But, how would I have known that I detest this book if I never picked it up? If you never read the book, in my mind you don’t get much of an opinion about it unless you have actually sampled some of the media you’re talking about. Because doesn’t that just make more sense?

So, reading the book enables you to discuss the book. It doesn’t matter how you felt about the book, because now you get to dive into the book as much as you want to, and you can get something out of the book, other than just plain reading it.

WELL, NOW YOU KNOW

andThe Night Gwen Stacy DiedΒ  Β Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, #1)Β  Β FangirlΒ  Β Wild AwakeΒ  Β Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

Think of the books you’ve most disliked in the last couple of years, do you wish you hadn’t read them? I see this talked about a lot in tags and other bookish discussions, and I see people talking about books they really wish they hadn’t read and I’ve always enjoyed this discussion. I think it’s really interesting because I can dislike a book or even hate it, but I’ve never regretted reading one. Sure, upon reflection Twilight isn’t great and I didn’t exactly think the Fifty Shades trilogy was the best literature available but, hey now I can join in on the discussions and have a properly informed opinion!

Why regret reading a book when you now have that experience, that you’ve hopefully learned from? Reading books is an experience, it teaches you what you enjoy and it shows you how you are your preferences can change over time.

JANE LYNCH: A favouriteΒ book featuring a character on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum

a havenEvery Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children, #1)Β  Β People Like UsΒ  Β Wild BeautyΒ  Β The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

I don’t know that I really have a favourite lgbtqia+ book (there are too many amazing books to choose from) but, these are some of the most recent ones I’ve read that I’ve loved! I’ve tried to add books from different genres to my list and I think these have all been really fun!

LADY JANE GREY: A short book that packed a punch

The Giver (The Giver, #1)

This is one of my favourite books ever. The Giver hits me every time I read it. It’s like being hit by a truck and then run over by a bus of screaming children… but in a good way.

The Giver is really fun and really smart and I love it more each time I read it.

JANE AUSTEN: Favourite heroine in a classic book

Persuasion

I really want to be cliche and say Elizabeth Bennet but instead, I’m only going to be partially cliche and go with Anne Elliot from Persuasion by the Jane Austen. I could’ve said so many other characters like Meg Murry or Anne Shirley but, I think Anne is a more relatable character. Anne is strong and resilient but always copping theΒ short end of the stick. She’s really sensible and always taking care of her family, but like all of us, she is also impressionable and easily persuaded (hence the title) but by the end of the book she develops as a character and comes into the world a better person.

Wow, I never realised how much I looked up to her until writing this.

JANE EYRE: Your favourite retelling

Lost Boy

Is this even a question at this point? Hi, if you’re new to my blog, my name is Ellyn, I am obsessed with Peter Pan and I have no shame.

Lost Boy is honestly one of my favourite reads of 2017 and by far the best retellingΒ I have ever read and I don’t understand why more people haven’t read it. It’s basically the story of Peter Pan from the perspective of one of the Lost Boys. It also really highlights the bad sides of Peter Pan that you definitely don’t see in the Disney film, which is one of the reasons I love it.

CALAMITY JANE: Your most anticipated release

a havenEscaping from Houdini (Stalking Jack the Ripper #3)Β  Β My Plain Jane (The Lady Janies, #2)Β Β Β Undying (Unearthed, #2)Β  Β The Mermaid

I mean, there are just so many. I think my top 2018 release would have to be Escaping From Houdini but, honestly, I am looking forward to so many good books this year!

JANE FONDA: A character who upholds feminist ideals

The Nowhere Girls

For this one, I’m going to go with the group of girls called The Nowhere Girls from the book of the same name. These girls are all amazing and the book is about them trying to find a voice and defend themselves in a town that doesn’t believe/& shames rape victims. It’s a really great book that gives a voice to women and shows how amazing we can be when we work together.

JANE KRAKOWSKI: An underrated book you wish more people would read

The Golden Door (The Three Doors Trilogy, #1)

The Golden Door is amazing and you should go and read it right now. I know that I talk about this book a lot but it is honestly worth it! I re-read this trilogy every year or two and it never gets old. I love the characters and I love his unique and interesting the books are, it just makes me really happy whenever I read it!

THE LADY JANIES: Two or more authors you wish would write a book together

haven haven haven haven havenA Wrinkle in TimeΒ  Β Every Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children, #1)

We all have an author duo dream team. for a lot of people it’s Adam Silvera and Becky Albertalli, but for me, hands down, it has to be Madeleine L’Engle & Seanan McGuire. I love their books and I think their book baby would be amazing! I love L’Engle’s writing and I think Seanan McGuire always writes really self-aware and interesting stories so combining their ideas would be amazing!

MONDAY 18

10:02 AM

I have no idea what to read halp.

I know I need to finish Final Draft so I can review it but, I’m not enjoying it and I kinda want to dnf it…

8:32 PM

I just finished reading Spider-Man/ Deadpool Vol 0 and oh my god no. I was in need of a laugh and this was just boring as hell.

TUESDAY 19

Today feels like it’s going to be a flop. I do want to read, but I have no motivation to do so, so I think I’ll just distract myself with blog posts and How To Train Your Dragon 2 and then tomorrow I’ll go nuts with some reading!

WEDNESDAY 20

How to Train Your Dragon 2 Poster

10:04 AM

So far, I have made a fully purple breakfast (porridge & a smoothie: just add blueberries) and I have also written a few blog posts so I am feeling slightly productive. Now, I’ going to put a poll up on Twitter & Instagram to see what I should read next!

You guys will decide between Ice Wolves & Wires and Nerve Vol 1Β which will hopefully distract me from my How To Train Your Dragon withdrawals.

8:13 PM

I just started reading Wires & Nerve and so far and I am really loving the art style. I’ve really stressed myself out in the last hour trying to figure out what my route to and from school is going to be for Uni. Basically, Mon-Wed I’ll be catching a 5:30am bus and getting home around 7-8 pm so I am less than enthused about this! But, I’m hoping getting back into the world of The Lunar Chronicles will help calm me down!

THURSDAY 21

Wires and Nerve, Volume 1 (Wires and Nerve, #1)

11:35 AM

I just finished Wires & Nerve Vol 1 and I really enjoyed it! It wasn’t perfect and I hate her love interest but, Cress and Thorne made my day and totally convinced me that I need to re-read the series asap!

8:29 PM

I really haven’t had much reading progress today. I decided to bake some cupcakes and try to convince my parents to help me search for a new laptop (I think I was successful??). I have listened to maybe 2 minutes of Ice Wolves before putting it down. I am mostly just in the mood to watch Friends and chill for the night. I will definitely be picking it back up tomorrow though! Seriously, if I don’t finish Ice WOlves by the end of the week you guys need to yell at me!

FRIDAY 22

Guess who hasn’t read a single thing today! I’ve spent most of the day watching Friends and writing blog posts! I haven’t so much as picked up a book, though I have discovered a new favourite movie (The Mummy with Brenden Fraser) tonight! I do hope to finally pick up a book tomorrow though!

SATURDAY 23

Elementals: Ice Wolves

1:11 PM

I’m finally reading! I just turned on my audiobook for Ice Wolves by Amie Kaufman. So far I’m not too fussed on it but, I’m hoping to warm up to it soonish. Especially, because I want to finish it before I go to the Lifeline Bookfest tomorrow and conveniently forget about all the books on my tbr.

SUNDAY 24

Today was the Lifeline Bookfest! Naturally I dragged mum and my brother and they got bags of books, while I got a stack of Brendan Fraser dvds, a Halsey album and another copy of Peter Pan. I don’t know what happened, maybe I malfunctioned or something??? I think I’ll go back later in the week though, because I have been saving up for this for ages, so I might as well check it out on different days.

Anyway, all this to say that I didn’t read anything today. I mostly spent the day looking at books so I never ended up actually picking one up and reading it, oh, the irony!
