Hey guys, today I’m taking a break at the library and recommending a movie series, and a Disney channel movie series of all things. Who even am I? I live in Australia and have never had the Disney Channel, so I am not typically drawn to these kinds of films. But, I got pretty sick in the backend of last year and I had heard about these movies so on a whim I put the first movie on and colour me surprised, I loved it!
I love fairy tales & retellings, I love musicals and I love kids movies so I feel like the team behind these movies reached into my head and made me a movie specifically to my tastes. I love it.
SO, WHY SHOULD YOU WATCH DESCENDANTS?
- HSM + Fairy Tales = Descendants
If you love that HSM nostalgia feel then this is perfect. I had no idea Kenny Ortega was part of the team for this franchise but as soon as the dancing started I just knew he was the choreographer. It feels a bit like High School Musical with fairy tale characters and that should feel weird but strangely, it doesn’t.
- It’s ridiculous
I mean, it’s a DisneyΒ channel film and the dancing is always ridiculous. But isn’t that the point? It’s a musical so it’s already weird that the characters are singing their inner monologues, so adding dance routines on top of that is almost ridiculous. But I love it. So, so much.
- Diversity
There is a main Asian character who *spoilers* doesn’t die *gasps*. It’s been a whole 2 movies and he’s still here, what a beautiful thing!
Not all the characters are super skinny, there are different body types and ethnicities The majority (pretty much most characters) are white and skinny, but I did feel the need to mention that a future love interest (second film) isn’t your typical skinny love interest. It shouldn’t feel refreshing, but unfortunately, it is.
There is also a recurring female character in a wheelchair, she is in multiple scenes in both films which I love.
- Great friendships!
The friendships are what really makes this film for me. There is is really great f/f and m/m friendships. They’re not treated as a joke or used to pit people against each other, these kids are just friends, what a thang!
The guys are even allowed to have “girl talk” and be in touch with their emotions which I rarely ever see in tv.
I’m from Australia too! I watched this with my little sister and while it is ridiculous it’s also such a fun movie!

Ayyy! What part of Aus do you live in?? My younger brother hates it so I honestly didn’t think I would care for the series, but low and behold, I love it!
