Hey guys, today I’m coming at you with a Harry Potter discussion talking about the casting of the character of Gelert Grindlewald. This is my first post in my new series.Β  Next year I will be re-reading all of the HP novels so I thought I would create a new feature, in which I discuss my thoughts and feelings about the Potterverse. The topics I discuss with you guys will be ones I really want to talk about like why I like or dislike a certain character and how I feel about the movies vs the books.

**Obviously, there will be spoilers for the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts franchise within these talks

So…as most of you probably already know, Johnny Depp was cast as Gellert Grindelwald way back in 2016 and the Harry Potter (and pretty much everyone else) had something to say about it. At the time Fantastic Beasts was arriving at the cinema, Johnny Depp was being accused of domestic abuse by his then wife. And as a lot more scandals are being revealed around more famous people like Kevin Spacey or Harvey Weinstein, who have both lost gigs because of this, are wondering why Johnny Depp’s role asΒ Grindelwald has not been re-cast.

Honestly, I think that anyone accused of any kind of assault should not be cast in tv or film, no matter how big or small the project is. I know I am definitely not alone in this opinion, with a large portion of internet-goers agreeing with me, whether they care about the film franchise or not. Is this fair to the actors? How far could this rule go?

I honestly don’t know but I am not here for actors being rewarded for assault, while fantastic unknown actors who have never assaulted (and would never dream of assaulting) a person go unnoticed.

However, there is still a few (I have only seen a couple) of people who still believe that Depp should be allowed to stay in the role. I don’t begrudge them this, if they don’t have a problem with him in the role then that’s up to them, but I just don’t agree.

Do you have any HP topics you want to me to discuss in this new feature? How do you feel about Johnny Depp’s casting?

  1. A great post about the issue! I pretty much feel the same and am really disappointed that they have not recast him, as they had the opportunity. I loved the first movie so much, so now I am a bit disappointed. I am also really torn about going to see the sequel now, since I loved the first one so much, but do not want to support their decision to keep Depp as an actor :/

    1. Thank you! I am mostly just disappointed, it would really help if they recast him, they are such a big franchise already and it would really make an impact and send a message, I mean he’s Johnny Depp. Also, the first film did so well, but now there are fans saying they won’t see the film just because he’s in it.
I know how you feel, on one hand, I really really want to learn more about Newt, and I really love Eddie Redmayne’s acting. But on the other hand, I have always disliked movies Johnny Depp is in and I don’t want them to think their decision to keep him on is acceptable.

      1. I sadly, highly doubt that they will do anything like that and I have also seen so many people saying they will not watch the movie now :/
Newt is my absolute favorite β™₯ I really don’t want to show them that their decision is acceptable as well, so I’ll see what I’ll do.

  2. I agree with you, especially since Harry was abused for years and that was always frowned upon in the books? It just seems a bit strange to me that a movie in the Harry Potter franchise would keep an abuser as a part of their cast, and that J.K. Rowling doesn’t speak up about it :/

Apart from that, I just don’t think Depp is the right fit for the role? I don’t find him that great of an actor and I just don’t understand why he was casted in the first place when he wasn’t accused of assault and abuse yet. I know there are people who still think he’s a great actor, but I’ve found him mediocre for years :/ To me it feels like he’s just been playing the same character all the time.Did Warner Bross think that they needed Depp to bring in audiences? Because it’s a Harry Potter movie, it really doesn’t need that

    1. Exactly! Rowling is supposed to be a really active speaker about this stuff, so it makes no sense that she’s supporting this casting decision. That being said, the film doesn’t come out until next year so they still have some time to recast him, though I doubt it will happen.
Yeah, I agree. Of anyone who I thought might be in the role, I really never thought he should be in the role. HE doesn’t suit it, he’s only there for his fame, which is ironic now that he is an accused abuser and only bringing negativity to the franchise.I agree, he’s really not a great actor and he really doesn’t suit the role, he looks like a bleached rat instead, he looks like a Depp character instead of Grindlewald.
That’s the point, this is a Harry Potter film, they really didn’t need to cast him at all. They could have just picked an unknown, especially since they’ve cast Jude Law as Dumbledore and Eddie Redmayne is already the main.
