Series I Won’t Finish! | Confessions #1

I’ve been meaning to make this post for months and am finally getting to it. Today I’ll be talking about all the series I won’t be finishing. I’m definitely not hating on these books or the authors, I just happen to have lost interest in the series shown below and doubt that I’ll ever continue them.Β

Also, a bunch of the series on this list I started 4 or 5 years ago but just haven’t continued and so I don’t think I will pick up the next books!

assdfghjasdfadThe Unbecoming of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer, #1)Β Divergent (Divergent, #1)Β The Maze Runner (Maze Runner, #1)

Mara Dyer //Β Divergent // The Maze Runner

I read Mara Dyer probably back in 2012 or 2013 and I actually read it in one day, and it was actually a school day, I have no idea why I thought that was a good idea but oh well. Anyway, I read The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer and really loved it but never got around to continuing the series. I always intended to keep going with the series, and sometimes i still consider it but then I got Goodreads and was bombarded by negative reviews. I know that a lot of reviewers I trust were not big fans of the continuations of the series so I probably won’t pick up the other books, also there’s a spin-off trilogy but it’s just in the love interest’s pov so I really don’t care about them.

Ah yes, do you guys remember Divergent? Well, I do, Divergent is another book I read in one sitting. I loved it when I read it but soon afterwards the third book came out I just lost interest. I had been given all three books but I had already been spoiled about the ending and I had tried to read book two and just didn’t care enough.

I always intended to finish the Maze Runner trilogy, and I even quite enjoyed the second novel. At one point I even started The Death Cure but was too bored so I took it back to the library. I was obsessed with the first film when it came out but I haven’t actually seen the other films either, whoops.

dhhhsaASDFDSStrange the Dreamer (Strange the Dreamer, #1)Β Beautiful Creatures (Caster Chronicles, #1)Β Fallen (Fallen, #1)

Strange The Dreamer // Beautiful Creatures // Fallen

Earlier this year I read Strange The Dreamer (you can read my review here) and while I loved the writing and for the first the plot, once the love interest was introduced the book went downhill. When I first started the novel I was thinking this was going to be a 5 star book for me, though by the time I finished the novel I was contemplating giving it 2 stars. I know that a lot of other people really loved the book, but I just don’t think Laini Taylor’s books are for me, so I won’t be reading the rest of the series.

With Beautiful Creatures and Fallen I can’t say I had the same experience, these books were quite hyped up when I read them but they just didn’t live up to the hype for me. Beautiful Creatures I couldn’t even finish, whereas, Fallen I did manage to get through it but I pretty much couldn’t stand it from chapter 1.

dbasdASDasASAVampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1)Β Sleeping Giants (Themis Files, #1)Β Replica

Vampire Academy // Sleeping Giants // Replica

Ahh, yes, Vampire Academy.Β At this point who hasn’t read this book? A few years ago this and TMI was all Booktube could talk about it so of course I picked it up… and I hated it. Though, not enough to put me off the serious, I had heard it got better and was determined to read the series. And so I picked up book 2 and it was even worse, and thus my experience with the series ended.

Sleeping Giants (my review) and Replica (my review) were both different experiences for me. Sleeping Giants was an automatic hit for me, I really enjoyed the way it was told and thought the story was really interesting. However, I read book Β two (my review) earlier this year and really didn’t enjoy it, everything I loved about book one, I hated in book two and I definitely won’t be continuing the series.

Replica however, had a really cool premise, one side is Lyra’s POV and flip the book and you’ve got Gemma’s. Though, for me, I found that by the time Β made it to the second pov I was bored with the story. I’ve heard there are other ways to read the story, like a chapter of each pov in turn but that’s super hard to do on a kindle so I doubt I’ll be continuing the series.

Have you read any of these series? Which series won’t you finish?

  1. Yes I totally agree with Strange the Dreamer! I wonder how the book would have been without the love interest as it just really stopped me from getting into the story and didn’t fit in with the book.

    1. I know how you feel, I often wonder what the show would have been like had the love story not been so immediate and overpowering. The story had so much potential, and pair that with Laini Taylor’s amazing writing, it just could have been so much better than it was.

  2. Yeah, Mara Dyer is definitely not worth finishing at all, and neither is Divergent. I’m not finishing Vampire Academy, The Maze Runner, and Replica series either! I actually loved the couple of Vampire Academy books I read, but I didn’t love it so much that I’d finish it! I enjoyed the first two Maze Runner books, but never finished the third one, and it’s been so long that I just have lost interest in it! And Replica I straight up DNF-ed; it was so boring. 😩

    1. I had been seriously considering trying to read the Mara Dyer series but honestly now that the author is re-writing the trilogy in the guy’s perspective I am not going anywhere near it. I’ve heard that VA gets better, but considering I disliked the first two books so much I really just can’t see myself considering, also I’m really not in my vampire phase anymore. Same with The Maze Runner, I read the first two and actually didn’t hate the second, but I couldn’t get into book three so I never picked it up again.

  3. I haven’t read the third Divergent book either. I liked Divergent, but Insurgent was weaker, and when I started reading Allegiant, I disliked the writing so much that I quit a few pages in.

I liked Strange the Dreamer, but I’m not sure if I’m invested in the sequel. It was decent as a standalone, in my opinion.

    1. Honestly, the Divergent series just doesn’t seem worth it anymore, the movies were bad and the author’s latest book and the problems tied to it just don’t make me want to pick up any more of his books.
Strange The Dreamer had such great potential, but honestly, I agree with you, it really could have stayed a standalone, without that ridiculous ending.

  4. Oh no your problem with Stranger the Dreamer is the exact problem I had with Daughter of Smoke and Bone. Is this something the author regularly does?? Stranger the Dreamer sounded really interesting, but now I’m not so sure if I should get it (I don’t have a very good library here, so I’d have to buy it if I’d want to read it)
I tried to read Fallen a couple of years ago, but didn’t get far. I couldn’t stand it either haha

    1. I think that the problem I had with Strange The Dreamer is definitely a common problem with the author. Unfortunately, her amazing writing just doesn’t make up for the cringey insta-love. I would definitely recommend trying to find it on Overdrive (audio or ebook) or not bothering, it’s not worth the money you would have to pay.
      Yeah, Fallen was just ew.
