March 15th- Books You Felt Betrayed By
-Beware the Ides of March! What books (or characters) did you feel betrayed by, for whatever reason…big or small.
This post will consist of books that I feel betrayed by, as in books that I read because of the hype and thought were not worth the praise I had heard.
Illuminae (Illuminae Files #1) by Jay Kristoff & Amie Kaufman
I read this last year because if you were anywhere near Booktube or Goodreads than you’d heard about Illuminae. It’s an interesting format, but the characters and the story didn’t vibe with me so I really didn’t understand the hype.

The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare
No, just no. I cannot explain to you, coherently what it is, exactly that I hate about this series. There is so much wrong with it – from it’s annoying, biphobic and over-sexualised characters to it’s incest and creepy plot. I hate the books, there is nothing, in my mind that could ever redeem these books.
My Favourite Review I Have Ever Read, Probably
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Mass
I found this book boring and underwhelming. I’d heard from so many people that this series would change my life but all I got from this book was that the main character was a really terrible assassin.
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire SΓ‘enz
This book has real characters, a good plot and fantastic writing but something about this book just didn’t click with me. I think it’s worthy of the hype, but I felt let down because I just didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would.
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe Review
A Thousand Pieces of You (Firebird #1) by Claudia Gray
This story has a great plot, it’s smart and it’s definitely sci-fi. The trilogy, overall get’s 2 stars – only for plot. The 3 stars it could have had, it lost because of the unbearable romance and the annoying characters.
Sorry to hear that Aristotle didn’t quite work out for you.I have heard so much about the book so I have been planning to read it soon. Glad to see that you think its worth the hype though π

Yeah, I really enjoyed the writing and I read the book in basically one sitting but for some reason really struggled to connect with it. However, one of my friends has read it and it’s one of her favourite books, so hope is not lost!

I’m currently reading Illuminae at the moment and I am quite enjoying it but I’m only 100 pages in so we’ll have to see how I feel about it later on :p

It’s definitely still a good book, and I know I’m in the minority when I say that I just didn’t enjoy it. I hope you enjoy the rest of it!

I TOTALLY agree on the Mortal Instruments. I’m still only 20% through it or something stupid, I refuse to pick it up again

Ugh, thank you. I read the first book 4 or 5 years ago and I won’t lie I thought it was good… when I was 12. I have since read so many good books and have really been introduced to good representation for queer characters, there are soo many better books out there!
Although, I must say I do watch the show, if you have Netflix I would definitely recommend giving it a watch! It’s very different to the books (thank god), it has better representation and there is no body shaming of Izzy like there was in the movie. In the film, not only does Alec almost choke Clary but there is also body shaming, ew ew ew.
Sorry, tanjent. basically good call with not continuing with the books.

I’ve thought about checking the show out on Netflix, I might do that! I’ve heard so many better things than the rest of the book’s media.

I just finished and reviewed “A Thousand Pieces of You” on my blog, and I felt so similarly about the romance! I was really put off and had to drag myself through the middle of the book. The beginning and end were the best parts because they actually were filled with action relating to plot, but the romance fell so flat. Throne of Glass I agree with you about as well. I started Crown of Midnight afterwards but was just so bored by Celeana that I never finished it.

I tried to read book one when it first came out but couldn’t get into it because of the romance so I ended up listening to the audio which made the story fly by a lot faster. The end was definitely the best for me, because it was over.
I was originally going to read COM but decided against it after reading reviews of the other books in the series. I am now so glad that I did not continue on with the series!

I agree with you on The Mortal Instruments. I was able to trudge along through a couple books, but it just got worse. I don’t understand the hype AT ALL for these. They just read very juvenile to me.
I get what you are saying about Throne of Glass though. I’ve read all the books released so far, but I mostly read for the supporting characters. Celeana is profoundly annoying.

Yeah, I’m really not a big fan of TMI. I read all 6 books because one of my friends was obssessed with them and was annoying me about them. I honestly do not understand the hype either!
