ILLUMINAE FILM DISCUSSION
My review of Illuminae (Illuminae Files #1)
I’m sure you guys have all heard of the book that took the reading world by storm at the end of 2015. Illuminae, written Β Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff has changed the way people read books.
If you’ve read my review of Illuminae, you know I wasn’t the biggest fan of the book, the plot was a let down and I didn’t like the main character, Kady and found the romance infuriating.
Don’t get me wrong the books is enjoyable enough, with the engaging format and from what I’ve heard the out of this world audiobook. (ARE YOU PICKING UP WHAT I JUST PUT DOWN.) But I just don’t think this book has enough meat in it to actually be a movie. I understand that the book 600 odd pages but to be honest not that much actually happened in the book. The plot is pretty generic and the characters are annoying so I just don’t know if the plot is really exciting enough for a film.
For this to work as a movie the writers will have to add a whole lot more to the story – jumpscares, new scenes…etc.
I hope this film will work out but at this point, not really knowing anything about the cast or writers I am very apprehensive. I feel like this is going to be a let down, similar to The 5th Wave. What really made Illuminae the phenomenon that it has become was the format, the blanked out words, the emails and the restricted documents. I just don’t think it will be at all possible to convey any of this on-screen.
Are you guys excited for the film? Do you think it will work or that they’ll botch it up?

I actually loved Illuminae and loved Gemina even more, but I don’t know. I mean, there are a lot of books said to become movies that never actually happen and this was picked up before it even came out like two years ago, so that doesn’t mean it WILL happen. But, I don’t have a general faith in YA book to movie adaptations just because it feels like directors don’t even try but we’ll see if it moves past the “Optioning” stage. π

It’s all up in the air whether or not the movie will ever be a thing. I agree about what you said about YA adaptations, directors really could put more effort into the films.

I agree, I’m not really sure how they could make the movie where it has the same impact as the film, especially certain plot twists. I feel like they might follow Kady as a main character and not show us stuff from other people’s points of view to keep a similar feel and just have her messaging people and us seeing their responses? The security footage would be easy to play but they can’t exactly have the narrator with all his personality telling us whats going on. It will be interesting to see how they do it, that’s for sure.

I agree, if the movie happens it certainly won’t have the same feeling the book had. Even if they go with the same overlying plot it won’t have the same impact the book had. Just thinking about it, this movie seems like it will end up being quite underwhelming.
