T5W:February 8th: Book Trends You’re Tired Of

February 8th: Book Trends You’re Tired Of
– What are some things you are tired of seeing that are trends in publishing? Maybe something that pops up on a lot of covers these days, or the popularity of certain tropes in a particular genre? Let it out!

Harmful tropes

I am so tired of reading books with racist or homophobic undertones. So many authors get away with it (*coughs* Veronica Roth) and I find this behaviour atrocious, not only from the authors but from the publishers also.

They seem to think that we want to read novels about abusive characters who are played off as romantic. Ugh, I could write about this all day but I have to rush this post because I scheduled it without finishing it (whoops!)

YA to NA or Adult

This seems to be happening a lot lately, you have the older, more well-know series like Harry Potter, which went from middle-grade to the lower end of Young Adult. But then you have the more well-know series like Throne of Glass which started off as a YA series and then was suddenly New Adult. I have a lot of feelings about this series for someone who has only read the first book. What pisses my off the most about this is that there are 12 years old and probably readers younger than that who started reading this series and then suddenly there are characters having mountain shattering, thunder inducing sex.

Sponsored Positive Reviews

okay, I won’t dwell on this because if you’ve been on Goodreads or Booktube you know what I’m talking about. If you can motivate yourself enough to review a book usually Β that means you had pretty clear feelings about the books, or even just particular aspects of the book. But. lately it’s come to light that some reviewers have been paid to write or video positive reviews about certain books. Honestly, this just annoys me, these reviewers and publishers and publishers are outright lying to their viewers and buyers – the trust is lost.

Love at first sight

It’s unrealistic Β and a tad creepy. You can think someone is hot or has beautiful eyes, you can think that someone has a really fun personality or that you really enjoy how cute someone gets when they talk about something they’re passionate about but love at first sight is not real. It can be fun to read in a really crappy romance novel but having it be present in soo many of the books I read has been pissing me off to no end lately.

Every character being able-bodied

Okay, so as someone who is not able-bodied this is a massive thing for me. To see that the majority of characters are able bodies really pisses me off, like even side characters are able bodied. Are you telling me that everyone in the world has 20/20 vision? Nobody needs glasses to read? Everyone can walk properly? Nobody has the arthritis gene that’s been passed own in the family? There is no one with a hearing disability?

I’m not even talking the big ass disabilities because that is a whole other can of worms. I’m just talking about the “minor” disabilities – these things impact people’s lives everyday and honestly can destroy relationships and lives. You don’t catch able-bodied people crying behind closed doors because they’re failing their class, not because they aren’t smart but because they can’t hear the teacher properly. You don’t catch able bodied people not people not being able to hold a pencil properly because of their genes.

We live hard lives and we are under represented. It’s insulting and highly offensive.

That’s all, I’m done now. *runs away*

    1. Yeah, it’s just something that’s been bugging me, especially recently. A lot of readers are talking about how they want to read more diversely, which is great but within that the majority of the books they’ve talked about have featured able-bodied characters.
